What does a school social worker do?
As defined by the National Association of Social Workers, "School social workers are an integral link between school, home, and community in helping students achieve academic success. They work directly with school administrations as well as students and families, providing leadership in forming school discipline policies, mental health intervention, crisis management, and support services.
As part of an interdisciplinary team to help students succeed, school social workers also facilitate community involvement in the schools while advocating for student success."

Amie Mikhael, Student Social Support Advocate
(913) 592-7473
My name is Amie Mikhael and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and a Licensed Masters Addiction Counselor (LMAC). I obtained my bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed my master’s in clinical mental health counseling at MNU. I started my career working at Kids TLC in Olathe within the residential facility. I transitioned from there to the outpatient setting, working at Johnson County Mental Health with children and families. I then began working in the residential setting again with the Adolescent Center for Treatment. My time working in these settings has provided me with a wealth of experience and has inspired me to move in a direction to provide support for those within the school setting.
I am so excited to be joining such a welcoming and wonderful school district! As the Student Social Support Advocate, you will likely catch me around Spring Hill High School, as well as within Prairie Creek, Dayton Creek, and Timber Sage elementary schools. I am here to learn about and support students with their individualized social emotional needs. In addition to this, I am here to support and provide resources/ideas for and work collaboratively with families, teachers, staff, and any others involved in the students support system. I hope to share creative ideas for how to manage and cope with emotions effectively within the school, provide education and resources on mental health and substance use, and, overall, to be a safe and supportive person for those in need. I look forward to meeting you all and becoming a part of USD 230!
